Testimonials

"My daughter, Kaila, has attended WSOD since its inception in 1997. It has been a great privilege to be part of a school where all the instructors are very caring and extremely dedicated to their students. Joanne Carey’s devotion to the art of dance has made the school a huge success and all the students adore her. Her commitment to the community is commendable and is evident through fundraising, offering a work study program and just this year introducing a “Little Stars” program for disabled children. The recitals are comparable to a professional production and leaves the audience feeling very proud to witness the cultivation of the dancers’ skills year after year. WSOD is a very special place and we are so happy to be a part of it." - Diane Starita

FAQ’S - How to choose the correct level

How do I know which level to register for my preschooler?

That’s easy.  At WSOD we consider a preschooler any child between the ages 2 ½ years
old - Kindergarten and our classes are structured in that manner.  A dancer must be the age of the class by October1st of the season that you are registering into. That means:

  • 2 ½ years old will be in a 2-½ year old creative movement class.
  • 3 years old will be in our TOTS classes.
  • 4 & 5 year olds will be in a 4 & 5-year-old class.
  • Kindergarteners will be in our Kindergarten classes or will have completed our

4 & 5 year old program.

What if I am currently in WSOD’s pre-school program and ready to move up to the next level but my child is not moving up in school?  Do I keep them with their dance friends or their school friends?

We always want what is best for your individual child. If for some reason your dancer may not be ready to move up in school (for example not ready for Kindergarten but is the age of Kindergarten) it doesn’t mean that they aren’t ready to move up in our program.   Our programs are designed for a child’s success and continued progression and achievement. Just don’t forget to tell us what is happening in school so that we can aid in your child’s skill development. You can always ask us our advice and opinion, we are happy to help direct you if you’re uncertain what is best.  Early on in dance training, there are indicators we as educators can spot around potential issues like reading, problem solving, dyslexia, spatial relationships etc.  Dance class during these formative years has been proven to help those very things!

What class do I register my child for once they are in 1st grade?

Beginning in 1st grade, any of the Beginner levels on our schedule is available for your dancer and they can take as many classes at that level as they wish.

What do the different levels mean and how long does my child stay in it and why?

3 GREAT questions.  Our levels are divided according to age, class in school and ability in order to maximize the greatest possible learning experience. It is important to know that in dance each level follows a set and specific syllabus geared towards an age range because of the similar cognitive and physical aptitudes those ages collectively demonstrate. So that will mean there is an overlap in age and class range resulting in a varied age group.  It is always important that a dancer is in the correct level to get the best possible experience and learn the skills appropriate in order to gain strength and avoid injury.  At varying stages of development and age children are able to learn more, learn quicker and process things differently.  Our syllabi reflect that.

Beginner Levels A & B: 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade (6-8 years old).
Level IA & Level IB: 3rd, 4th, 5th grade (8-10 years old).
Level IIA & Level IIB:  6th, 7th, 8th grade (10-13 years old).
Level IIIA & Level IIIB: 11 years old & up.
Level IV – High School or by recommendation.

How long does a dancer stay in a level?

A dancer stays in each level for 2 years in a row and then moves up to the next level. The more a child dances however the quicker they progress through a level.  Evaluations and trials in a certain level are always available.  You will find however that in the higher levels (Level III & IV) a dancer might remain in that level longer than 2 years.

What if my dancer takes ballet (or jazz etc.) and wants to try your other dance classes?

No problem.  We encourage well – rounded dancers. And we encourage the right fit.

My child just wants to have fun, why is it so strict? They are never going to do this for a living!

Dance IS fun! And we want your child to have fun but dance is also hard work and it’s an artistic discipline. Some of the greatest success stories are the ones that don’t fit the typical mold and no one ever believed that it could be doneAt WSOD we are a team of believers!  We teach that you can do what you strive for.  Dance is just that type of discipline - it imitates the highs and lows, struggles and successes and challenges and accomplishments of life. Dance intrinsically has you reach for stars!!
